Shaun Project Space Crits are really useful for us to get critiqued by other students. We can get new ideas, new media to work with and artists to look at. I attended 3 crits before the Uni was closed down, and the images I have are sourced from the Universities Instagram which will be cited in my bibliography post.
The first crit featured artists by Cristina Bratu, Kelly Dunlop and Tiana Dorian. Cristina is working with paint on canvas and pencil drawings, Kelly is looking at sculpture and welding, and Tiana is looking at drawing using dots and creating masks. There is such a varied amount of media used with these artists, no-one has anything that looks the same, which is something that I admire. I like that they have all pushed their ideas and gone for something really different. Each of the works presented have admirable attributes. Cristina's drawings are well proportioned and visually interesting to look at. Kelly has created something that is beautiful from all angles and leaves a lot of exploration for the audience to see. Finally, Tiana has such an intricate way of working when it comes to her drawings, but also is very free when it came to her bright and colourful masks.
This is the second crit, which shows the work of artists Alessandro Patella, Andrew Barge and Katie Carr. What is interesting about this is the variation of work made. Alessandro and Andrew are working with fluid art and mark making where as Katie is looking at creating a structure and modelling a village. What I really like about all of the work presented is how everyone really pushed what they were going to do, they produced amazing work. What I like about Katie's modelling is how neat and precise she is when it comes to the construction, but she is really playful with what she is making and the materials she used. Andrew has used layers of paint and tape to get an interesting colour combination, and has applied the pant in a free and relaxing way. Finally, Alessandro has bright, bold colours which I could stop looking at, and I was curious as to how he applied the colour to the canvas.
Finally, this crit showed the artwork by Lydia Henley, Finlay Scott and Danielle Thompson. Again, the artists that showed in this crit varied with the media used which is really refreshing to see. What is nice about this space is it's so dark in the room when the lights are off, so Lydia and Finaly's work really stood out and was so bright. Lydia's film of the beach was so relaxing to watch, she had made a soothing video of different sounds and things moving naturally which was really nice to see. Finaly is working with digital editing, which she is amazing at, seeing all of her photos they looked like they could have been in a magazine. Finally Danielle's multiple use of media is so incredible, that all of her pieces are really detailed and beautiful.
The timing of Shannon, Matthew and my exhibition meant our crit was going to be the following week after our exhibition opening, but due do Covid-19, we couldn't have ours. It is unfortunate because we couldn't collect feedback but we were lucky enough to have our exhibition which is something that I am proud of.
