Whilst working for my ART280 module, I have been researching into surrealism for my HAD231 module. This has meant I have read a few books about surrealism and some of the main characters within it, but I have also read about Egon Schiele. I chose to read about surrealism because it has helped me understand more about the artwork I made myself, and whether or not I am tapping into the unconscious mind. Coming to the end of my essay, I decided I was somewhere within the middle of the unconscious and the conscious mind. These are 5 books that I have read:
The first book is called Surrealism by Patrick Waldberg. In this book it is showing and explaining many of the famous pioneers within the surrealism movement and showing off their work. What I liked about this book was it gave me just a bit more knowledge about Dali an Magritte that I didn't know, but also showed a few other artists. Books like such also give inspiration as you can find new artists who you are inspired by.
The second book is called Surrealist Art by Sarane Alexandrian. Again, just like Waldberg's book this providing information about the infamous artists within the surrealism movement. These books came from the same publisher, giving them both that encyclopedia feel to them, which I found useful when it came to learning and researching.
The third book is called The Autobiography of Surrealism, edited by Marcel Jean. This book was slightly different in the sense of it took you through the development of the movement and how it has been adapted to each artist. This has more of a historical feel, as you can learn about all the artist who began the movement.
The fourth and final book on surrealism is Surrealism and After by The Gabrielle Keiller Collection. In comparison to the third book this one does talk about the history but also pushing towards more recent surrealism artworks. As I have mentioned I was looking into surrealism for my HAD231 module, so I was looking at them for answers on the unconscious mind, but surrealism inspires me as an artist to I thought these would be the best to choose.
My final book is Egon Schiele by Esther Selsdon. This is focusing more on Schiele's life and the artworks made by him over the period. As mentioned in previous posts, Schiele was not afraid to work with the obscene, which is something I didn't know until researching into him. I got a better insight to Schiele as an artist but I also got to see a variety of works that he made.
